Citigroup probes ’suspicious’ India deals

New Delhi, India (CNN) — Citigroup’s India unit has launched an investigation into suspicious transactions based on documents believed forged by an employee, the bank said in a statement.
A police complaint has also been filed in connection with the suspicious transactions that happened at a bank branch in Gurgaon, a New Delhi suburb, according to the statement Tuesday.
China’s rare earths export cut raises trade concerns

China has raised fresh international trade concerns after slashing export quotas on rare earths minerals, risking action from the United States at the World Trade Organization.
China, which produces about 97 percent of the global supply of rare earth minerals, cut its export quotas by 35 percent for the first half of 2011 versus a year ago, saying it wanted to preserve ample reserves, but warned against basing its total 2011 export quota on the first half figures.
South Korea backs six-party talks with North

South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak has said there is no choice but to try to dismantle North Korea’s nuclear programme through diplomacy.
His comments came after he received his foreign ministry’s annual report.
They follow a year of high tension, including exchanges of fire between North and South.

Children may be safer growing up in Kabul than they are in London, Glasgow or New York, a Nato official has said.Mark Sedwill said the Afghan capital, as a “city of villages”, was better for youngsters than many Western cities, despite dangers posed by the conflict.
The senior civilian representative told CBBC’s Newsround: “Most children can go about their lives in safety.”

Death toll rises after Indonesia tsunami

At least 23 people have been killed and 167 are missing in Indonesia after a localised tsunami triggered by Monday’s earthquake off the coast of Sumatra.Scores of houses were destroyed by waves after the 7.5 magnitude quake, which struck 13 miles (20km) under the ocean floor near the Mentawai islands.
