Most Afghan parliamentary election results announced

Results have been released from all but one of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces in September’s parliamentary elections.
The outcome in Ghazni has been delayed after indications that not a single candidate from the largest ethnic group, the Pashtuns, had won a seat.

England begin their bid to defend the Ashes and secure a first series victory in Australia for 24 years at the Brisbane Cricket Ground on Thursday.
Their last victory at the Gabba was in 1986 when Mike Gatting led England to a seven-wicket win in a 2-1 series win.
Two South Korean civilians died in attack by North

The bodies of two civilians have been found on the South Korean island of Yeonpyeong, shelled in Tuesday’s attack by the North.
Two South Korean marines also died, and many were injured when dozens of artillery shells hit the island - most of them striking a military base.
New Zealand mine: ‘No survivors’ after second blast

Police Supt Gary Knowles said there was no hope that anyone could have survived the “massive” underground blast at the Pike River mine on South Island.

Olli Heinonen, deputy director at the UN’s nuclear watchdog until August, said the virus might be behind Iran’s problems with uranium enrichment.
Kabul ’safer for children than many Western cities’

Children may be safer growing up in Kabul than they are in London, Glasgow or New York, a Nato official has said.Mark Sedwill said the Afghan capital, as a “city of villages”, was better for youngsters than many Western cities, despite dangers posed by the conflict.
The senior civilian representative told CBBC’s Newsround: “Most children can go about their lives in safety.”
Israel starts building barrier on Egypt border

Work is beginning in Israel on a barrier along the border with Egypt, aimed at stemming the flow of illegal immigrants into the country.
The barrier, including an electric fence and surveillance technology, will run for 250km (155 miles).

US envoy: N Korea nuclear plant ‘provocative’

Evidence of a new North Korean nuclear programme is disappointing and provocative, says the top US envoy on North Korea, Stephen Bosworth.
He said the uranium enrichment plant was in violation of a UN resolution but added that it was “not a crisis”.
